Spa Education by Hugh Jones and Spa Team International.


Hugh Jones has been in the spa & fitness industry for 21 years and has successfully directed spa programs in several 5-star hotels, resorts and planned communities. He began his career in 1981 at the world famous spa at Palm-Aire, Pompano Beach, Florida. Hugh later moved to the Bonaventure InterContinental Hotel & Spa in Fort Lauderdale, where he was recruited by Turnberry Isle Yacht & Country Club in Aventura, and was named “Manager of the Year”. During that time, Turnberry was rated “Number 1 resort in the U.S.” by Lodging and Hospitality. Following the successful opening of the P.G.A Spa in West Palm Beach, Florida, Hugh was Vice President of Development for M.C.M. International, a spa consulting and management company. During this period, he was involved with all aspects of design & spa operations with projects for Canadian Pacific Resorts in Banff, Alberta, Canada; Buena Vista Palace in Orlando, Florida; and Melia Resort in Cancun, Mexico. In 1995, Hugh was recruited by K.S.L. Recreation Corporation to manage the transition and integration of the Saturnia Spa at Doral, Doral Golf Resort in Miami, Florida. The spa was rated “Number 2 in the United States”  by Zagat.

In 1997, Hugh was appointed General Manager of Hippocrates Health Institute in West Palm Beach, Florida and in 1999 it was voted “Number 1 in Medical Health Resorts” by Spa Management. Hugh graduated from Management Performance and Development Programs in the Hospitality Industry with Inter-Continental Hotels and Victoria International of Boston.

As a faculty member of Academy of Esthetics and Spa Therapies, he has conducted Spa Manager Certification courses since 1998. Hugh is on the board of directors of the Florida College of Natural Health. In 2008 Hugh became Adjunct Professor at Florida Gulf Coast University at Fort Myers, Florida.  He also holds a M.Ed. degree in Exercise Science from the University of Western Carolina.

Hugh has also written several articles for Spa Management on planning for profits within the spa, recruiting and managing spa staff, and reviewing existing spa operations to improve service and profitability. During his many years as a Spa Director, Hugh Jones, has mentored many staff members that have gone on to become successful Spa Directors at several prestigious properties. Since 2000 Hugh has been involved with spa design and development in over 80 successful national & international projects in Switzerland, Canada, USA and New Zealand.

This course was created by Hugh Jones M.Ed to assist staff employed in the Spa Industry section of Resort and Hospitality and Wellness Tourism who do not have access to training but want to learn more about Spa Operations and Management. The information presented in this course will be helpful to people new to or already employed in the spa industry and looking for upward professional mobility within the Resort and Hospitality industry worldwide.

This course allows you to “study in your own place at your own pace”. It is intended for students of all ages who have a genuine interest in studying the spa and wellness industry which is growing rapidly in many countries around the world.

Chapter 1 Spa Industry Statistics

This chapter shows the categories of spas and the impact the spa industry has had on the resort and hospitality industry, the leisure industry and lifestyles in today’s communities. This chapter also focuses on revenue opportunities, demographics of spa clients and the services they want.

Chapter 2 Industry Growth and Challenges

This chapter takes a look at the exponential growth of the industry and the many pit falls in managing spa operations and how to avoid them.

Chapter 3 Leadership and Management

Identifying who are your leaders and managers is critical to the success of your day to day operations. Knowing the differences and their characteristics is important for you to place your staff in the correct position for them and you to succeed.

Chapter 4 Five steps to assure your success

Clearly identifying and refining strategies in each of the five steps and following or adjusting your business plan will insure that you are paying attention to the details of running your business.
